Mnangagwa Appoints Evelyn Ndlovu as Sithembiso Nyoni’s Successor: What This Change Means for Zimbabwe

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Evelyn Ndlovu as the new Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife. This change comes after Sithembiso Nyoni was dismissed from the Cabinet earlier this month under unclear circumstances.

Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President, announced Ndlovu’s appointment on Friday. He stated that her new role begins immediately, emphasizing that she was chosen under Section 104 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Before this position, Ndlovu served as the Minister of State for Matabeleland South. Now, she faces important challenges, especially considering the increasing effects of climate change and concerns about wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe. The new minister has a significant task ahead, as this portfolio deals with the country’s natural resources, national parks, and strategies to tackle climate change.

In a related move, Albert Nguluvhe, a former director of the Central Intelligence Organisation, has been appointed as the new Minister of State for Matabeleland South. This reshuffle indicates Mnangagwa’s ongoing adjustments within his Cabinet, especially as the country gears up for significant economic and political developments, including the implementation of key climate policies.

This appointment is timely. A recent survey by the World Bank shows that Africa is highly vulnerable to climate change, with increased droughts and floods affecting livelihoods.
