Exciting News: Monarch Media has just acquired the rights to A Walk to Remember, a beloved romance from Nicholas Sparks. They plan to create a reboot with the help of the original producers, Denise Di Novi and Hunt Lowry.
Originally published in 1999, A Walk to Remember tells the story of a rebellious high school senior who unexpectedly falls for a quiet, faith-driven girl during a school play. Through their relationship, he learns about love, forgiveness, and the importance of living purposefully. The film adaptation, released in 2002, featured Shane West and Mandy Moore and, despite earning under $48 million at the box office, remains a fan favorite in the romantic drama genre.
The reboot’s production team includes Steve Barnett, Alan Powell, and Vicky Patel from Monarch Media, along with Di Novi and Margaret French-Isaac of Di Novi Pictures, and Lowry with Patty Reed from Roserock Films. This marks a special moment for Barnett, who contributed to the original film two decades ago while working with Di Novi.
“A Walk to Remember has lasted for years as a favorite coming-of-age story, touching hearts with its themes of love and personal growth,” said Barnett. “We are thrilled to introduce a new version of this timeless tale to audiences, especially alongside the original producers.”
Di Novi expressed gratitude to Steve and Monarch Media, saying, “This inspiring story of faith, hope, and love needs to be shared with a new generation.”
Lowry, also involved in the reboot, echoed the excitement: “I’m delighted to help bring this classic story back and to partner with Denise and the Monarch team again.”
Nicholas Sparks is widely recognized as one of the world’s best-loved storytellers, with all his books landing on the New York Times bestseller list and over 130 million copies sold globally. His works, including The Notebook, have gained massive popularity, with many adapted into films. Sparks’ latest novel, Counting Miracles, came out last fall and is currently being adapted for film by Amazon.
Additionally, Sparks is collaborating with M. Night Shyamalan on a supernatural romantic thriller that includes a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Monarch Media has produced noteworthy films, such as Richard Linklater’s Hit Man and the action thriller Valiant One. They are also working on an animated feature called Tangles, featuring a star-studded cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston.
This rights deal was negotiated by James Ellis for Monarch Media, along with representatives from related companies. Sparks is represented by a team of literary and media advisors.
