Hasbro has just shared exciting news about a new take on the classic game Monopoly. This version ditches the traditional banker role. Instead, there will be something called Monopoly App Banking, using smartphones to keep track of transactions and make gameplay smoother. Set to hit stores this August for $25, each player will need their own phone to use the free app.

To get started, players will download the Mobile Banking App, which takes care of money and property transactions. Simply pick a game piece and scan it into the app. With tasks like buying properties handled automatically, it aims to attract younger players with a fresh approach. Interestingly, the classic properties like Boardwalk and Park Place are swapped out for Rocket Launch Pad and Moon.

This new version isn’t the board game I remember playing. Back in the day, games could stretch on for days with cash involved. Who didn’t love those colorful bills? The thrill of passing Go and collecting $200 was unbeatable. But with an app handling everything, it feels different. Will it capture that same magic?

The Good: Less Math to Worry About

For those who struggle with math, this change is a plus. No more counting change or keeping track of your money manually. Instead, players can focus on strategy without confusion. Plus, the absence of a banker means smoother gameplay. The essence of Monopoly—making smart real estate decisions and negotiating with others—remains intact, no matter how the money is handled.

This isn’t the first time Monopoly has evolved. There are already other digital versions, including Monopoly Go and the Monopoly Super Electronic Banking board game.

On a different note, Monopoly Deal is a card game that focuses on strategy without electronics. It’s great for family game nights and suitable for kids ages 8 and up.

The Not-so-Good: Missing Out on Real Skills

However, the traditional version of Monopoly offered kids a chance to learn math and basic financial concepts. With the new digital system, those lessons might be lost. Paper money added a tangible element that made the game feel real. Without it, will kids miss out on valuable experiences?

“While I know Hasbro wants to keep up with changing play styles, I worry that kids will miss out on the fundamental learning opportunities the old game provided,” says Cat Bowen, a Senior Editor who reviews various kids’ products. “The digital version requires a smartphone, which could encourage more screen time—a concern for many parents today.”

We might give the new version a shot. Younger kids, accustomed to smartphones, may adapt quickly. But holding a stack of cash while playing Monopoly is a unique experience—and it’s something the app can’t replicate. Thankfully, the classic version is still an option for those who prefer the traditional approach.
