A man named Samuel Kimble, aged 25, has been recaptured after escaping from a minimum-security prison in Monroe. He fled just before 11 p.m. Thursday, but officials didn’t realize he was missing until 3:30 a.m. Friday. Kimble was gone for about 12 hours before authorities found him at the Lynnwood Transit Center, around 18 miles away.
Chris Wright from the Department of Corrections (DOC) explained that staff discovered Kimble’s absence during a routine count. Surveillance footage revealed he had left much earlier than the staff realized. It remains unclear if he had help with the escape.
Once officials learned of the situation, they locked down the complex and informed local law enforcement and schools. Residents, like Thomas Phillips, expressed concern. “I think [the DOC] should figure out what happened,” he said.
According to Wright, escapes from inside facilities are unusual statewide. In fact, the last escape from this prison occurred two years ago. In that case, a prisoner broke into an office to steal keys and was apprehended in Seattle days later.
Tips from the public played a crucial role in locating Kimble. “We’ll do a critical incident review to analyze how he escaped and if changes to safety protocols are necessary,” Wright noted.
Interestingly, Kimble sustained injuries from the prison’s fence during his escape. He had roughly seven months left on a 27-month sentence for assault. As a result of this incident, he will be moved to a higher security unit while awaiting trial for the escape, which could lead to hefty fines and additional jail time.
This recent escape highlights the ongoing challenges within correctional facilities. According to the latest DOC reports, there are currently 1,407 inmates in Monroe Correctional Complex, with 259 in the minimum-security unit, indicating a significant number of individuals situated at various risk levels.
In summary, while escapes are rare, they serve as a reminder of the complexities and vulnerabilities within the prison system. Whether new measures will be implemented following this incident remains to be seen, but safety will undoubtedly be a priority.
