Montana food banks are bracing for a drop in supplies due to cuts in federal funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). In March, the Montana Food Bank Network faced a significant loss of $2.5 million, which is about 40% of its federal budget. This funding cut translates to an alarming decrease of 600,000 pounds of food available statewide this year.
TEFAP is crucial for the network, supplying food to 73 partner agencies across Montana. One of these agencies, Billings Family Service, is anticipated to lose around 140,000 pounds of TEFAP food this year. Program Manager Debbie Anderson expressed concern about upcoming shipments, particularly noting that protein shortages will likely hit hardest since it’s a staple in Montana diets.
Community support is becoming increasingly essential. Billings Family Service Board member Ed Ulledalen understands the impact of these cuts but remains optimistic about local involvement. “We’re hoping to expand our support from both financial donors and local businesses,” he said. Ulledalen also emphasized the significance of volunteers in the distribution process, which is crucial for their operations.
As the demand for assistance rises, more Montanans are seeking help. Food Bank Network President Gayle Carlson pointed out that many people are turning to food banks due to rising grocery prices and layoffs, including the 360 U.S. Forest Service workers let go in February. “We’re witnessing a surge in requests from our partner agencies,” Carlson noted.
Despite these challenges, Carlson remains hopeful. “We are exploring various resources to meet the increasing needs of our community,” she said. “It may take time, but we are dedicated to finding ways to support those in need.”
Overall, these developments highlight the critical role that community support plays in maintaining food security in Montana. With both local input and volunteer efforts, there is a path forward to mitigate the impact of these funding cuts.
