Montgomery County is making waves with its reforestation efforts. The county’s Reforest Montgomery program snagged an Award of Merit from the American Planning Association for its outstanding work in sustainability.
This award highlights the program’s impact on expanding tree cover and strengthening community involvement in environmental conservation. Christina Sorrento, the chief of the Environment & Climate Division, expressed pride in the collective effort. “Reforestation is a key weapon in our fight against climate change,” she noted, acknowledging both the team and the community.
Launched in 2020 with support from the Forest Conservation Fund, the Reforest Montgomery program aims to plant trees and restore forested areas. It also offers incentives for residents to join in on these efforts. Since its inception, over 5,000 Native Trees Discount coupons have helped homeowners buy trees at local nurseries. Additionally, the Free Shade Trees program has seen 976 trees planted, enhancing the county’s canopy and reducing urban heat.
The program also focuses on reforestation in parks, with hundreds of large trees planted across various acres. Collaborations with Montgomery County Public Schools since 2023 have added even more trees to school properties.
Interestingly, past statistics reveal that urban areas can be up to 10 degrees hotter than surrounding rural areas. This temperature difference underscores the importance of tree planting initiatives like Reforest Montgomery. By increasing tree coverage, the program not only cools the environment but also boosts air quality and wildlife habitats.
According to a recent study from the U.S. Forest Service, urban tree canopy can significantly improve mental health outcomes in communities. Planting trees not only beautifies the space but fosters a sense of well-being.
