Morehead State University celebrated a special moment during Homecoming 2025 by naming its stadium after football legend Phil Simms, an alumni from the Class of 2015. This tribute took place on Saturday, October 18th.
The day kicked off with a heartfelt ceremony outside the stadium. MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan welcomed a large crowd of alumni, fans, students, and locals in honor of Simms’ legacy.
Kelly Wells, the Director of Athletics and a proud member of the Class of 1995, introduced Simms by saying, “Few have brought as much recognition to Morehead State as Phil Simms.” He highlighted how unique it is for a school to have a Super Bowl MVP among its alumni. Since graduating, Simms has given back to MSU by hosting football camps and staying connected with the coaching staff and players.
Simms reflected on his journey from being a student-athlete to becoming an NFL icon. He shared how much it meant to have friends and former teammates join him for this celebration. “If I had to name my closest friends, they’d all be from here,” he said. His emotional words showcased his strong bond with the university and the community.
Simms’ involvement with MSU goes back years. He has played a significant role in mentoring, fundraising, and supporting the football program. His return to complete his degree and receive an honorary doctorate highlights his lifelong commitment to the school.
“Phil Simms embodies the spirit of Morehead State,” said President Morgan. “His journey reflects perseverance and loyalty. Naming this stadium is a tribute not just to him, but to his impact beyond our campus.”
