Motorboat III clinched victory in the Doyle Sails Cavalli Islands Race 2025 after a thrilling 46-hour contest against Equilibrium and Ocean’s Tribute. This race showcased skillful sailing, strategic choices, and a test of endurance along the stunning New Zealand coastline.
The race began at 10 a.m. on a Friday, with a gentle north wind guiding the fleet out of the Rangitoto channels. Right from the start, Motorboat III and Equilibrium established their lead, closely followed by Ocean’s Tribute. The trio often sailed closely, navigating through light winds and making careful tactical decisions.
As the boats ventured toward Cape Brett, they faced various challenges. By midday, light winds left them drifting in patches, where the boat that found a breeze could quickly gain an advantage. It was a battle of nerves as they jostled for position, often just meters apart.
By nightfall, the competition grew fiercer. Weather changes, like lightning near the Bay of Islands, affected their speed. Boats would surge ahead, only to get stuck in calm spots. As dawn broke, Electric Tribute led into the Cavalli mark, but the closeness of the race was extraordinary.
A critical moment arose when the boats chose their routes for the return leg. While Ocean’s Tribute veered east, hoping for clearer winds, Motorboat III and Equilibrium maintained a central path with denser breezes. This decision would ultimately shape the outcome of the race.
Skipper Guy Chester of Ocean’s Tribute reflected on the importance of choice: “Too many times we could have made a different decision with a different result.” The struggle highlighted how every small decision could cost or gain precious distances.
As the leading boats gathered in the Hauraki Gulf, it became a thrilling showdown. At 9:40 a.m., Motorboat III crossed the finish line, marking a stunning win for a smaller vessel against its larger competitors.
The outcome of the race proves the Cavalli Islands Race is a brilliant prelude to next year’s Round North Island event, promising more extraordinary stories from the sea.
