Mike Amesbury, a former Labour MP, was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail for assault. The 55-year-old punched Paul Fellows, 45, in Frodsham, Cheshire. The incident, which occurred on October 26, was caught on video and led to Amesbury’s guilty plea.
After the event, Amesbury was suspended from the Labour Party. In court, the Deputy Chief Magistrate, Tan Ikram, highlighted that Amesbury’s actions were fueled by anger and a loss of control. He pointed out how harmful such behavior could be, mentioning that a single punch could have dire consequences.
During the attack, Amesbury continued to strike Fellows even after he fell to the ground. The magistrate noted that this escalation made Amesbury’s actions more severe. “You were only stopped by bystanders,” Ikram stated, emphasizing that public figures should model appropriate behavior for others.
While passing sentence, the magistrate made it clear that jail time was necessary for punishment and to deter future incidents. He acknowledged Amesbury’s lengthy career in public service but deemed his unprovoked, drunken behavior too serious to warrant community service.
Amesbury was taken directly to custody after the sentencing, with an application for bail during his appeal being denied. He was to be transferred to HMP Altcourse in Liverpool following the court proceedings.
