MPs Warn: UK Airport Expansion Threatens Climate Targets and Future Sustainability

Plans to expand airports in the UK are raising serious concerns about climate goals, according to MPs from the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC). They warn that supporting airport growth, often framed as a boost for the economy, could jeopardize the country’s commitment to reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

The report highlights that current efforts to reduce emissions from air travel depend heavily on technologies like sustainable aviation fuel, which are still not widely available. The committee believes that relying on these unproven solutions, alongside airport expansion, constitutes a dangerous gamble for the environment.

The MPs stress that the government has not shown that the economic benefits of airport growth outweigh the negative effects on climate and the environment. With no plans to manage flight demand—like capping the number of flights—there is a pressing need for clear alternatives to significantly reduce pollution.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is currently reviewing proposals to expand major airports, including a third runway at Heathrow and increased capacity at Gatwick and Luton. Critics argue that these expansions are moving forward without solid evidence supporting their economic rationale.

Toby Perkins, chair of the EAC, pointed out the challenges of decarbonizing the aviation sector. He stressed that expanding airport capacity could complicate efforts to meet climate targets. “The government needs to demonstrate how it plans to meet its climate goals if it continues to approve these expansion projects,” he said.
