Last night, Munich Airport in Germany faced a temporary closure due to reported drone sightings, adding to the growing list of European airports impacted by drone activities.
After 10 p.m. local time, 17 flights were grounded, affecting nearly 3,000 travelers. Additionally, 15 flights coming from other locations were diverted to cities such as Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and even Vienna.
A staff member at the airport reassured passengers, saying, “Some flights are still waiting to take off, others have been canceled. Everything is under control, and the airport is expected to reopen at 5 a.m.”
Munich serves as a hub for Lufthansa and saw around 20 million passengers in the first half of this year. This incident is part of a wider trend; recently, several airports in Denmark also had to shut down due to similar drone sightings, disrupting tens of thousands of travelers.
In response to these disruptions, Denmark has banned all civilian drone flights as it prepares for an upcoming summit on European security, discussing critical issues like support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
Europe is on heightened alert as drone sightings continue, with allegations of Russian drones violating NATO airspace in countries like Poland and Romania. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted this tension, stating that one country poses the greatest threat to Europe’s security: Russia.
Despite these claims, the Kremlin has denied any involvement in the drone incidents or airspace violations.
Munich, known for its vibrant culture and history, was already anxious after its popular Oktoberfest festival faced a shutdown due to a bomb threat just days earlier. These events reflect a rising concern about air travel security and the implications of drone technology in civilian airspace.
