On February 24th, a tense incident took place at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. It all started around 6:35 PM when police responded to a report about a possible active shooter on campus.
To ensure everyone’s safety, the university activated its emergency alert system. This meant students and staff were told to shelter in place while officers looked into the situation. Thankfully, it turned out to be a misunderstanding linked to a dispute among students.
Muskingum University President, Sue Hasseler, praised the effectiveness of their notification system. “The report went out immediately to our campus police and local law enforcement,” she said. “We were able to inform everyone to take shelter.”
The news spread quickly on social media, leading to increased anxiety on campus. Officials urged everyone to depend on official communications instead of unverified online claims. Despite the panic, students banded together, offering support during the lockdown.
President Hasseler emphasized the importance of clear communication. “We learned that sharing information without verifying it can create challenges,” she explained. “Our community is strong and cares for each other. We will work together to overcome any issues.”
Once authorities confirmed there was no threat, the shelter-in-place order was lifted. The safety and well-being of students and staff continues to be the university’s main concern.
