Linda McMahon, the education secretary nominee, spoke at her confirmation hearing on Thursday. She mentioned that President Donald Trump knows working with Congress is important for any changes to the Department of Education.
When Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana asked if closing the department would need Congress’s approval, McMahon acknowledged that it was critical. She emphasized the intent to do things properly and that such changes would definitely require legislative support.
“Our goal isn’t to defund programs,” she clarified, “but to make them run more efficiently.”
During the hearing, which took place in front of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, McMahon highlighted her commitment to improving the department rather than cutting it outright.
McMahon has a unique background. Before this role, she was a pro-wrestling executive and led the Small Business Administration under Trump’s first term. Though her experience in education policy is limited, she served for about a year on the Connecticut State Board of Education.
The Trump administration, along with Elon Musk, is already planning changes for the Department of Education, which McMahon could lead if confirmed.
