Hyderabad: Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan made a special appearance in the dressing room after India’s impressive six-wicket win over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Stadium on February 23. Dhawan was there to present a traditional field medal to the game’s best fielder.
This medal tradition began during the ODI World Cup, thanks to fielding coach T Dilip. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been sharing videos of this medal presentation ceremony after matches in ICC events and bilateral series. With Dhawan’s visit, the event felt even more lively and memorable.
The atmosphere in the dressing room was joyful, especially with India’s strong position for the semi-finals following a key victory over their rivals. Dhawan, an ambassador for the Champions Trophy 2025, surprised everyone with his unexpected entrance. He was dressed sharply in a cream blazer and white shirt, shining with confidence reminiscent of his playing days.
Virat Kohli, who was in great spirits, couldn’t hold back his laughter at Dhawan’s charismatic presence. The two shared a fun moment as Dhawan performed his signature thigh-five with Ravindra Jadeja. Both Kohli and Jadeja were thrilled to see their former teammate, who has an impressive record in ICC tournaments. Dhawan is known as “Mr. ICC” because he’s the only player to have won the golden bat award twice in the Champions Trophy, given to the highest run-scorer of the tournament.
Dhawan awarded the fielding medal to Axar Patel, who made two pivotal run-outs against Pakistan, including a direct hit that dismissed opener Imam-ul-Haq. Axar’s performance outshone that of his teammates, Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer, making him the deserving recipient of the medal.
Coach T Dilip praised the team’s efforts, stating, “The way we cut the angles was excellent. The feedback from KL (wicketkeeper) was that the accuracy of the throws was amazing.”
