In Taiwan’s “Little Myanmar,” home to many Sino-Burmese, the atmosphere was tense after a strong earthquake hit Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The news of the quake spread quickly, but with Myanmar’s unreliable internet and reports of power outages, families anxiously waited for updates from loved ones.

Khin Mg Oo, who has a niece in the affected area, experienced the heartbreak of uncertainty. He finally received a late-night message confirming his family was safe. The brief video they shared showed their two-story house had endured some damage but was still standing. “It was a relief,” he shared about hearing from them, as many in the community faced similar worries.

Since the military coup in 2021, internet restrictions have made communication even harder. Although most local families reported minimal issues, others were not as fortunate. Many in Taiwan’s community have roots dating back to the Chinese Civil War in 1949 when soldiers fled to Burma. Today, about 50,000 Sino-Burmese live in Taiwan, with the community largely centered in New Taipei City.

At Hnin Hnin’s milk tea shop, the mood was somber. “Most of us couldn’t sleep last night, and we were constantly sharing updates with one another,” she said. “Many feel that if we were in Myanmar, maybe we could help.” This sense of helplessness is common as people deal with the emotional toll of being far away during crises.

Recently, a survey showed that over 70% of foreign communities are more likely to mobilize for support during disasters affecting their homeland. This finding highlights the strong connections people feel even when separated by distance. Following the quake, community members in Taiwan organized a fundraising drive to assist victims back home, showcasing their commitment to helping those in need.

While many relatives remained safe, there were tragic losses, like a Burmese student in Taiwan who lost her mother in Mandalay. This earthquake serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by immigrant communities as they navigate worry and longing for their families during emergencies.
