Namo Bharat Train’s Historic Adventure

This weekend, the Namo Bharat train took a significant step by crossing the Yamuna River for the first time. It reached the Sarai Kale Khan transit hub in southeast Delhi during trial runs. This is an exciting preview as the station gears up for its official opening in June.
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) led these initial tests along a 4.5-kilometer stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan. This marks the first time the Namo Bharat train has ventured into the busy Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor. During the tests, the train traveled over a 1.3-kilometer bridge and navigated major routes like the Ring Road and Barapullah flyover.
Once fully operational, the complete 82-kilometer corridor of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is set to shorten travel time significantly. Currently, trains already run on a 55-kilometer section between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South.
In these latest trial runs, engineers carefully controlled the train’s speed as they checked crucial systems, such as the power supply, signaling, and safety features like platform screen doors.
The Sarai Kale Khan station will be a key hub, connecting four types of transport: Indian Railways, Delhi Metro, Inter-State Bus services, and local city buses, making it easier for commuters to switch between rides. The station, spanning 215 meters in length and 50 meters in width, is designed for efficiency, with pedestrian bridges linking it to Hazrat Nizamuddin station, the metro station, and the Inter-State Bus Terminal.
As the station nears completion, construction teams are busy adding the roof over platforms and completing several elevators and escalators.
According to recent studies by the National Capital Region Planning Board, the Namo Bharat corridor is expected to serve about 800,000 passengers daily. This project includes 25 stations, with 68 kilometers elevated, 13 kilometers underground, and 3 kilometers at ground level. Complete service from Delhi to Modipuram is anticipated by 2025, promising a one-hour journey that could radically change commuting patterns in the region.
This ambitious project, with a budget of around ₹30,274 crore, aims to make travel faster and more convenient, pushing forward India’s transportation future. Keep an eye on this developing transit system, as it could be a game-changer for daily travelers.
