Rep. Nancy Mace has taken a bold step by filing a motion to expel her fellow Republican, Rep. Cory Mills. This move follows a report that Mills was considering doing the same to her.
Mace didn’t hold back. She voiced her frustration, claiming, “The swamp has protected Cory Mills for too long.” She highlighted what she described as serious allegations against Mills, which include claims of physical abuse, cyberstalking, and misrepresentation about his military service. Mace emphasized, “Any Member who votes to keep him here supports a woman beater and a fraud. He needs to go immediately.”
Mace’s resolution lists multiple accusations against Mills, including sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations. In November, the House Ethics Committee began a formal investigation after Mills faced another censure resolution. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has called for a swift investigation, stating that the process should be expedited so Mills’ future can be determined quickly.
In response, Mills questioned Mace’s motivations and highlighted her own legal troubles. He suggested that Mace’s claims lack due process and called for transparency regarding her own alleged controversies.
Interestingly, this back-and-forth comes during a time when tensions in the House are high. Mace, who is also running for governor in South Carolina, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Her past attempts to censure Mills have been blocked, and the Ethics Committee has been actively looking into his conduct since August 2024.
This situation reflects a growing concern about behavior within Congress. Recent statistics show that public trust in lawmakers has hit record lows, with only 12% of Americans believing Congress is doing a good job, according to a recent Gallup poll. This declining trust highlights the urgency for accountability in political figures, especially in light of the allegations against both Mace and Mills.
