FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team celebrated their first home conference win this season against the Saint Martin’s Saints, bringing their winning streak to 10 games. With this victory, they improved to 12-1 overall and remain undefeated in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) at 3-0.
The GNAC is known for being highly competitive, and this matchup showcased that intensity. From the very start, both teams fought hard for every point. The energy was palpable in the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium, with impressive digs and powerful blocks on display.
Saint Martin’s initially took the lead, 13-9, in the first set due to strong defensive plays. But the Nanooks quickly fired back, especially with standout performances from Presley Engelauf and Cynphany Henderson. Unfortunately, the Saints secured the first set, 25-20.
Set two was all about strategy for the Nanooks. Senior captain Elena Guc kicked things off with an exquisite tip shot, followed by her team’s effective offense. Fresh out of the gate, the team demonstrated excellent teamwork, taking the second set decisively, 25-15. Junior libero Tessa Onaga was impressive on defense, showcasing her skills with 21 digs throughout the match.
The excitement in the third set reached new heights. Peri Hoshock served three aces in a row, propelling the Nanooks to an 15-8 lead. With Guc’s additional kills, they took the third set as well.
In the final set, the Saints fought back, creating a nail-biting atmosphere. Despite the Nanooks’ early lead, the Saints tightened the score. However, the connections between players like Henderson and Ainsley Smith sealed the win for the Nanooks at 26-24, and Guc, with 14 kills, was named Player of the Match.
By the Numbers
- Cynphany Henderson nearly achieved a triple-double with 30 assists, 19 digs, and seven kills, making her a key player as the season progresses.
- Guc led the offense with 14 kills, while Engelauf contributed with 10. Ainsley Smith added 17 assists, complementing Henderson’s performance.
- Onaga’s stellar defense was further highlighted by her 21 digs, which earned her recognition as a two-time GNAC Defensive Player of the Week in the current season.
- She is on track to break the Nanooks record of 4.74 digs per set, set by Tiffani Pulver in 1997, with her current average of 4.78 digs/set.

The Nanooks will face Western Oregon this Saturday, with first serve at 2:00 PM. Western Oregon lost to the University of Alaska Anchorage in their recent match, so it’s a perfect time to show your support!
