Some Nantucket locals are not thrilled about a new twist from a popular retailer. Roller Rabbit, known for its teen and tween sleepwear, nearly had to leave downtown last summer due to a ban on chain stores. Instead, they found a creative solution. This season, they returned as “The Roller Rabbit General Store,” changing their branding and products to comply with local rules.
Julie Biondi, a former clothing store owner in the area, expressed her frustration. She believes that allowing more chain retailers is detrimental to the island’s unique character. “The downtown is the crown jewel of the island, yet we are giving it away to off-island big money,” she said.
Last summer, Roller Rabbit faced an enforcement order just weeks after opening on Centre Street, officially marking the first time the chain store ban was enforced. The bylaw aims to protect Nantucket’s unique shopping experience, stating that chain businesses can undermine the island’s economy and historical charm.
To adapt, Roller Rabbit diversified its offerings, aiming for a multi-brand retail concept. According to Hānnah Kinser-Sampedro, the brand’s vice president, less than half of the store’s products will be Roller Rabbit items. This move was intended to meet local guidelines while attracting customers looking for a unique shopping experience.
Comparing past trends, local shops worry about losing ground as larger retailers move in. Biondi believes that if this continues, small businesses will be replaced by “chainlet stores.” She suggested that Nantucket should consider stricter measures, like limiting the number of stores a single brand can operate on the island. “It’s a huge issue,” she warned. “Eventually, it will affect everyone’s real estate values.”
Many island residents share Biondi’s concerns. Social media has seen discussions about maintaining Nantucket’s character, with some residents using hashtags like #SaveNantucket to voice their opinions. Although residents express disappointment, they also feel overwhelmed by the challenge of keeping their own businesses afloat amidst changes in the retail landscape.
The chain store ban allows exceptions for grocery stores and well-established brands like Ralph Lauren, which complicates discussions about fairness. As the retail scene evolves, the balance between local charm and commercial interests remains a hot topic.
