Napoleon Solo Triumphs Over Iron Honor in Thrilling Preakness Showdown

LAUREL, Md. — Napoleon Solo surged ahead to win the Preakness Stakes, holding off Iron Honor in a thrilling finish. This victory marked a significant comeback for Napoleon Solo, who had struggled in previous races, finishing fifth in both the Fountain of Youth and the Wood Memorial earlier this year.

With Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo absent, the field was wide open, featuring 14 horses at Laurel Park, where this year’s race took place due to renovations at Pimlico in Baltimore.

Interestingly, Taj Mahal was the pre-race favorite at 9-2 odds, the longest for a Preakness favorite since the race changed its distance to 1 3/16 miles in 1925. However, by the time the race started, Iron Honor’s odds shifted from morning line favorite to 8-1.

Taj Mahal charged out of the gate and led for the first quarter, covering it in a brisk 22.66 seconds. Despite his early lead, he struggled to keep pace, ultimately falling behind Napoleon Solo, who took the lead as they entered the stretch. Iron Honor tried to catch up but finished 1¼ lengths behind.

In this year’s more subdued atmosphere, attendance was capped at 4,800, a stark contrast to past events filled with fans and live entertainment. This was a notable win for trainer Chad Summers and jockey Paco Lopez, marking their first victory in a Triple Crown race. Napoleon Solo returned $17.80 on a $2 bet.

Summers acknowledged the doubts surrounding Napoleon Solo’s abilities this year. “All year long, fifth place, fifth place. People said he wasn’t as good as he was in the Champagne,” he remarked. “This win will show what he can really do.”

Also notable was the large field of 14 horses, the most since 2011. The race showcased a mix of established names and emerging challengers, indicating a competitive racing season ahead. While Taj Mahal had raced at Laurel before, ultimately his early lead wasn’t enough to secure the victory.

As we reflect on this year’s race, it’s worth noting that the shift in the location and atmosphere has brought a new layer to the Preakness Stakes, which continues to evolve while upholding its prestigious legacy.
