Recently, satellites spotted a stunning turquoise glow off the southern coast of Australia. This vibrant light comes from a large group of bioluminescent phytoplankton blooming in the waters of the Great Australian Bight and the Tasman Sea. Expert oceanographer Jochen Kaempf from Flinders University explained that the dark green color comes from chlorophyll-a, a pigment that helps phytoplankton grow. Kaempf noted that the glowing areas might be influenced by sediments or different types of phytoplankton also contributing to the light.

Phytoplankton are the bedrock of marine life. Their seasonal blooms support many species, including up to 80 blue whales that visit Australia’s Bonney Coast each year. These whales feast on krill and other small fish, which rely on phytoplankton for food. This bloom is not just vital for marine creatures; it plays a significant role in producing oxygen and regulating the climate.
