This innovative thruster works by using strong electric currents to accelerate lithium plasma. While other electric thrusters have been used in spacecraft—like the one powering NASA’s Psyche mission—this specific type has yet to be tested in space.

NASA sees this development as a crucial step toward sending astronauts to Mars within the next decade. NASA administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the agency’s commitment to Mars exploration, noting that this test marks a significant leap in electric propulsion technology.

Why is this important? Electric propulsion is efficient. It can use up to 90% less propellant compared to traditional methods. This allows spacecraft to build up speed gradually rather than relying on powerful bursts of thrust. However, a crewed mission to Mars would still require substantial power—around two to four megawatts—meaning multiple MPD thrusters would need to run for over 23,000 hours.

Unlike SpaceX’s Starship, which relies on thousands of tons of liquid methane and oxygen, the MPD thruster presents a different approach. Paired with a nuclear power source, it could significantly reduce the launch mass needed for human missions to Mars.
