NASA Issues Urgent Advisory: Protect Your Safety by Keeping Your Badges Private Amid Growing Harassment Concerns

A senior official at NASA recently advised employees to “use discretion” when showing their badges in public. This request comes amidst concerns about potential harassment faced by federal workers outside their jobs.

Dr. James Polk, NASA’s chief health and medical officer, expressed pride in working for the space program but urged caution due to increasing negativity towards federal workers. He noted that the current climate has raised alarms about safety for his team.

The term “federal worker” has been under fire, especially since President Donald Trump has used harsh language to criticize government employees, labeling them as “bloated” and “sloppy.” His administration has also moved to reduce the federal workforce significantly, further intensifying these concerns.

Polk’s warning followed an incident reported by Nicola Fox, an associate administrator at NASA, where an employee was confronted at a Starbucks simply for being a federal worker. This incident was particularly troubling to Polk, who stated that it was one of the saddest emails he had to send out.

NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner confirmed that the agency has received reports of harassment directed at employees but clarified that the term “assault” used in Polk’s email may have been an exaggeration. She advised employees to remain aware of their surroundings and report any troubling incidents.

Meanwhile, federal employees are feeling increasingly uneasy. The negative rhetoric from Trump and his allies has heightened their anxiety in a work environment where they feel targeted. This disconnect is evident, especially in light of startling demands from figures like Elon Musk, who oversees efforts to streamline government operations and has reportedly suggested that employees must prove their work ethic to retain their positions.

Adding to this atmosphere, remarks from political figures, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, indicate a widespread belief that federal employees are not deserving of their jobs or salaries, creating further unrest among government workers.

Although NASA recently avoided anticipated layoffs, it’s still seeing a reduction in workforce due to voluntary buyouts. Dr. Polk has urged his team to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, emphasizing the importance of operational security in their daily lives.
