CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – NASA is gearing up for another practice launch countdown. This event marks the agency’s first crewed moon mission in decades. Repairs to fix dangerous fuel leaks have pushed the flight to March.
Not long ago, the first fueling test was interrupted due to similar liquid hydrogen leaks, which also halted the Artemis program’s unmanned flight three years earlier.
The launch teams have worked hard, replacing seals and filters at the Kennedy Space Center, where the giant Moon rocket stands ready. They’re now restarting the countdown. This two-day test will conclude with an attempt to fill the rocket’s fuel tanks.
The four astronauts of Artemis II will watch this essential dress rehearsal from a distance. Their nearly 10-day mission aims to take them past the Moon, around its far side, and back home, checking vital systems like life support along the way.
A successful fueling test is crucial. Until it’s confirmed, NASA won’t set a launch date. The Space Launch System, or SLS, could possibly launch on March 6. Though there was talk of an earlier date, officials decided more time is needed to evaluate test results.
There’s a lot at stake. The last crewed mission to the Moon was in 1972 during the Apollo program. Now, Artemis aims to explore the Moon’s south polar region, with plans to keep crew members on the lunar surface for longer durations.
According to a study by the Space Foundation, interest in space exploration has soared lately, especially among younger generations. Approximately 80% of people aged 18-24 believe space missions benefit Earth’s future, reflecting a shift in public perception since the Apollo days.
