A recent study in the journal Nature confirmed that lightning can occur in the Martian atmosphere. Dust devils, swirling winds formed by warm rising air, are common on Mars. Lead author Baptiste Chide, a planetary scientist from L’Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie in France, explains that while static charging is well-known on Earth, it rarely results in lightning there. However, Mars’ thin atmosphere allows for easier electrical discharge, requiring less charge to create sparks.

The findings were significant because scientists have suspected lightning existed on Mars for a long time, especially since it’s been observed on more distant planets like Jupiter and Saturn. Unlike those planets, Mars is the only one we can study closely with robotic missions.

What’s fascinating is how the Perseverance rover made this discovery. The rover’s SuperCam microphone, originally designed to analyze rock sounds, picked up 55 electrical disturbances since its launch in 2021. Interestingly, 16 of those were linked to dust devils passing over the rover. This suggests that these whirlwinds—rather than the dust storms we often hear about—are the source of the lightning.
