A recent discovery by NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars has sparked curiosity and debate. The rover captured a photo of an unusual cone-shaped object in the Gale Crater, which some initially suspected might be human-made debris. NASA later clarified that the object is likely just a rock shaped by Martian winds, which are surprisingly powerful even with the planet’s thin atmosphere. “We’ve seen many Martian rocks that, from certain angles, resemble familiar shapes,” a NASA spokesperson explained. The rock measured about 1 cm and was photographed from 13 feet away.

Astrophysicist Loeb pushed back against NASA’s interpretation, suggesting that if the rock were typical, we should see others like it nearby. “The image shows no other objects resembling this one in its environment,” he argued in a statement.
