NASA has just shared stunning images of comet 3I/ATLAS, an extraordinary object that has captivated the public since its discovery in July. Speculation surrounding the comet has overflowed, with some even wondering if it could be an alien spacecraft. However, scientists are confident it’s a natural comet from an unknown star system.
The agency had been quiet due to the U.S. government shutdown from October 1 to November 12. This shutdown coincided with comet 3I/ATLAS’s close pass to the sun. By October 29, the comet reached its closest point to the sun, entering an active phase. The silence from NASA during this time fueled conspiracy theories, raising questions about transparency.
When NASA finally hosted a live stream on November 19 to reveal the images, they aimed to squelch the rumors. Amit Kshatriya, NASA’s Associate Administrator, confirmed, “This object is a comet. It looks and behaves like a comet… all evidence points to it being a comet.” Yet, this comet is special—it’s only the third known interstellar comet, potentially the oldest and most massive of its kind, offering plenty of reasons for excitement.
NASA captured these images using various instruments. Notably, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been surveying Mars since 2006, took stunning pictures of 3I/ATLAS as it sped past in early October. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) orbiter also contributed by gathering ultraviolet images that will help researchers understand the comet’s composition.
Recent insights reveal that 3I/ATLAS may have originated billions of years ago from a star system older than our own. Tom Statler, a lead NASA scientist, stated that because the comet is traveling three times faster than typical stars, it might have been wandering in space for eons. “This gives me goosebumps,” he shared, emphasizing the comet’s significance as a glimpse into a distant past and possibly a different solar system.
Images from other observatories, including the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory and the asteroids-chasing Psyche and Lucy spacecraft, are still being analyzed. Researchers hope these observations will shed further light on the comet and its tail.
As we study this cosmic celebrity, it serves as a reminder of the vastness of our universe and the mysteries waiting to be uncovered. For those interested in a deeper dive, check out NASA’s details on comet 3I/ATLAS here.
