To understand the recent success of NASA’s DART mission, let’s start with what it aimed to do. DART, short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, was designed to test our ability to change an asteroid’s path. Why does this matter? It’s a crucial step in planetary defense, helping protect Earth from potential asteroid threats.
The mission focused on two asteroids: Didymos and its smaller companion, Dimorphos. To confirm that DART had a significant impact, researchers meticulously tracked Didymos’ orbit around the Sun using precise measurements. One interesting technique they employed was monitoring stellar occultations. This occurs when an asteroid moves in front of a star, causing the star’s light to briefly disappear.
Capturing these occultations isn’t easy. Astronomers must be in the right spot at the right time, often using numerous observing stations miles apart. A team of dedicated volunteers monitored 22 such events between late 2022 and early 2025. “These observations were crucial in assessing the changes DART made to Didymos’ orbit,” said Steve Chesley, a senior researcher at JPL.
The effort paid off. By studying Didymos’ motion, researchers also learned more about both asteroids. They found out Dimorphos is less dense than previously thought. This aligns with the idea that Dimorphos formed from debris that came off Didymos, creating what scientists call a “rubble pile” asteroid.
Just how significant is this mission? Recent statistics highlight the growing concern about asteroids. According to the Near Earth Object Program, there are over 26,000 near-Earth objects that scientists are monitoring. With the success of DART, we now have a clearer plan to address potential threats.
DART was created by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory for NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office. It represents humanity’s first attempt to move a celestial body intentionally.
