Exciting news is on the horizon with NASA’s upcoming Skyfall mission aimed at Mars. Last summer, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory teamed up with AeroVironment to introduce a unique concept: sending six small helicopters to explore the Martian atmosphere.
Recently, NASA confirmed that Skyfall is set to launch in 2028. This mission will employ a spacecraft powered by nuclear electric propulsion (NEP), which is being hailed as “the first nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft.” It’s a significant step forward in space travel technology.
NEP systems work like nuclear power plants here on Earth. They rely on a fission reactor to generate electricity. This technology is different from what’s typically used in space, like radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), which power many of NASA’s deep-space probes. RTGs produce electricity from the heat of radioactive decay but don’t contribute to propulsion.
According to NASA, NEP can effectively operate at various distances from the Sun, making it crucial for future exploration. This technology might play a role in missions venturing to the outer solar system and setting up a moon base as part of the Artemis program.
The spacecraft for this mission, called Space Reactor-1 (SR-1) Freedom, could change how we approach interplanetary travel. It’s designed to establish the groundwork for future fission power systems that will enable ongoing exploration beyond the Moon and into Mars.
AeroVironment shared further details back in July. The Skyfall helicopters will work independently, gathering vital information about potential landing sites for future astronauts. They will send back high-resolution images and radar data to help identify areas rich in resources like water and ice. This data is essential for confirming whether Mars ever supported life.
The Skyfall mission takes inspiration from Ingenuity, NASA’s first helicopter to fly on Mars. Ingenuity successfully completed 72 flights from April 2021 through January 2024, proving the viability of aerial exploration on the Red Planet. But unlike Ingenuity, which focused on demonstrating technology, the Skyfall helicopters will have specific scientific duties.
