Last year, NASA’s Curiosity rover made an exciting find on Mars. It drilled into what is believed to be an ancient lake bed and discovered long-chain organic molecules called alkanes. These compounds could hint at past life on the Red Planet.

Researchers think these molecules may have originated from fatty acids, which are key components of cell membranes on Earth. This discovery adds to the idea that Mars might have once hosted life billions of years ago. While it’s not the definitive proof we’re all hoping for, it certainly fuels curiosity.

Recently, a team led by Alexander Pavlov from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center shared their findings in a paper published in Astrobiology. They argue that the presence of these organic molecules can’t easily be explained by non-biological processes. Despite millions of years of radiation bombarding Mars after it lost much of its atmosphere, the concentration of alkanes they found suggests something more intriguing.

One idea is that these long-chain molecules were deposited by carbon-rich dust and meteorites, but Pavlov and his team remain skeptical. They studied how radiation could degrade these molecules over 80 million years and concluded that the original levels of alkanes were likely much higher than previously thought. They attempted to account for all known non-biological processes but couldn’t explain the high concentrations they observed.

In simpler terms, it seems that biological processes are still the best explanation, even after thorough investigation. “We argue that high concentrations of long-chain alkanes are not compatible with known sources of organic molecules on ancient Mars,” the researchers state.

Yet, the team is careful not to claim that they’ve found life. There could still be unknown non-biological processes that explain the presence of these organic molecules. They acknowledge Carl Sagan’s famous idea: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Any suggestion of life on Mars will always face intense scrutiny, and multiple lines of proof are needed.

As curiosity grows, researchers like Pavlov are calling for more studies. Understanding how radiation affects these molecules in Martian conditions could provide further insights.

Mars, once blanketed with oceans, rivers, and lakes, continues to captivate scientists and enthusiasts alike. The quest for understanding its past and the possibility of life continues, reminding us how much we have yet to explore beyond our own planet.
