NASA’s Moon Rocket Rolls Out for Upcoming Launch
NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, standing 322 feet tall, has just made its way back to the launch pad after some repairs. This behemoth, along with the Orion spacecraft, is now set for the Artemis 2 mission, aiming for a launch no earlier than April 1. The journey to the pad took about 12 hours and faced delays due to high winds. The rocket finally settled into place on the pad at 11:21 AM EDT on March 20, 2026.
Last month, a helium flow issue on the upper stage forced NASA to postpone its initial launch plans. However, this problem has been resolved. Technicians used this time to conduct essential prelaunch work. They replaced batteries for the flight termination system on various rocket stages to ensure everything runs smoothly.
The Artemis 2 mission is historic. For the first time, astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen—will live and work aboard the Orion spacecraft. Their journey will take them around the Moon before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean about ten days later. This mission paves the way for future Artemis missions, with Artemis 4 set to land astronauts on the Moon in 2028.
NASA’s plans for the Artemis program have evolved. Recent announcements include shifting the first Moon landing from Artemis 3 to Artemis 4. Instead, Artemis 3 will focus on testing Orion’s docking with SpaceX’s Starship lunar lander or Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mk.2.
