Nathaniel Hackett is back with the Green Bay Packers. Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed this in his Thursday press conference, revealing that Hackett will take on the role of defensive analyst.

This position isn’t new for the Packers. Last season, Robert Saleh, fresh off his exit from the Jets, brought a valuable perspective to the offensive side of things. Similarly, Luke Getsy once filled a defensive analyst role after leaving the Raiders and remains with the team as a senior assistant.

LaFleur spoke highly of Hackett, saying, “He’s a guy I really respect. We’ve had a lot of great times together.” He emphasized the benefits of Hackett’s fresh viewpoint, which will offer the defensive staff a different way to analyze game film. “He’s been in our linebacker room going through the film, giving them a good offensive perspective,” LaFleur added.

Hackett has a history with the Packers, having been the offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021. He then went to the Broncos but was fired after a tough loss to the Rams, ending his first season. In 2023, he worked as the Jets’ offensive coordinator, reuniting with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Unfortunately, he lost his play-calling duties midway through the 2024 season.

Hackett’s return is timely. The Packers are aiming to strengthen their defense, especially after last year’s struggles. In the 2023 season, they ranked 25th in the league for defense, allowing an average of over 350 yards per game. Bringing in a fresh set of eyes could be just what they need.

Expert analysts have noted that having someone like Hackett on board can ignite new ideas and strategies. The NFL is constantly evolving, and teams that adapt often see better results.
