LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. — Many in the Capital Region are noticing a sharp rise in their energy bills this month, with some seeing increases of 100% or more. To help those facing these challenges, National Grid teamed up with the Lake George Food Pantry to connect customers with support and financial aid.
This event is part of a series where people can meet directly with consumer advocates. These advocates will review bills, explain payment options, and assist in applying for aid programs.
For those worried about losing service, there’s Emergency HEAP, a state program designed to prevent disconnections of heat or electricity. Kari Kelly, a consumer advocate, emphasized its importance, saying, “If they’re still struggling, there is Emergency HEAP if they’re facing a disconnect.”
The advocates also introduced customers to local agencies that provide grant assistance. National Grid has its own programs too, like the Energy Affordability Program (EAP), which offers monthly discounts for eligible customers. “That can really help customers lower that monthly bill that they’re seeing right now,” Kelly explained.
In addition, National Grid shared news about grant programs like Care & Share, which assists those who’ve used HEAP but need more help as the heating season continues. The Hope & Warmth program supports moderate-income families just above HEAP limits but struggling with energy costs.
According to recent statistics, energy prices have surged significantly, and many households are feeling the pinch. A report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration noted that energy costs are expected to rise by around 30% this winter, affecting low-income families the most.
This rising trend in energy bills has sparked discussions on social media, with many expressing frustration and seeking advice from community members. Some are sharing tips on energy conservation and local resources, creating a sense of community amid a challenging situation.
