Nationwide Recall: Corn Dogs Dispatched to Schools and Stores Linked to Injuries from Wood Debris

About 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage products from Hillshire Brands have been recalled due to reports of pieces of wood in the batter. This announcement came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Saturday.

The recall affects over 25 different items sold at stores like Walmart, Meijer, and Target. Popular brands impacted include Jimmy Dean and State Fair.

According to the FSIS, these products were sold online and delivered to schools, food service locations, and Department of Defense facilities across the country. However, the products sent to schools came from commercial sales, not from the USDA’s National School Lunch Program.

Hillshire initiated the recall after multiple complaints, including five reports of injuries. The affected products were packaged between March 17 and September 26, 2025.

FSIS expressed concern that some of these items might still be in consumers’ refrigerators and freezers. They advised that anyone who has purchased these products should not consume them.

Consumers are encouraged to dispose of the recalled items or return them to the store. A full list of the affected products can be found here. You can also see the labels for the impacted items here.

The recalled packages carry establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” on their labels. For more details on retail distributors, visit the FSIS website.

This incident sheds light on the importance of food safety. Issues like this can impact consumer trust and lead to significant financial losses. According to recent statistics, food recalls in the U.S. have seen an upward trend, with over 100 recalls reported in just a few months last year. Experts emphasize the need for stricter safety standards to prevent such occurrences in the future. It’s crucial for consumers to stay informed and vigilant, especially when it comes to packaged foods.
