Navigating Mental Health Challenges: Insights from the Rice Lake Conference Addressing the 2024 HSHS Sacred Heart Closure

RICE LAKE, Wis. — Mental health resources are in urgent demand across rural Wisconsin. County health leaders recently gathered to discuss the impact of HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital’s abrupt closure in 2024. This Eau Claire facility was a lifeline for emergency mental health care, and its loss is being felt deeply.

Tonya Eichelt, the community services director in Polk County, highlighted the longstanding shortage of help. “We began working on this last year after Sacred Heart closed. It greatly affected our northern and western counties,” she explained, underscoring the need to reconnect communities with adequate mental health services.

With the nearest facility now in Winnebago, residents face long trips for care. Don Burrows, chief deputy of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, shared his frustrations. “We handle many mental health calls. It’s tough when people need help, and we have to transport them across the state,” he said. This lengthy travel means longer wait times for those in crisis, which only complicates their situations further.

State Senator Jesse James is taking notice of these issues. “Our region is hurting,” he admitted, expressing a commitment to advocating for funding to enhance local mental health infrastructure, including substance abuse support.

A recent survey found that 40% of rural residents reported difficulties accessing mental health services. In addition, national studies show rural areas often have fewer than half the number of mental health providers compared to urban centers, exacerbating these challenges.

Demand for care continues to rise, while resources dwindle. Those affected often find themselves in emergency rooms for medical clearance, which can add to their distress. As Burrows pointed out, the lack of local options makes it hard to provide timely and effective care.

The road ahead will require collaboration and commitment from both local governments and state officials. The community is calling for immediate action to bolster mental health services and ensure residents have access to the support they need.
