On Wednesday, OpenAI released two updated AI models: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. These new versions are now available in ChatGPT. OpenAI wants these models to feel warmer and more conversational, addressing earlier feedback that the previous versions seemed overly cheerful.
The company has faced mixed reactions lately. Some users were unhappy with the overly polite tone of the earlier models, while others raised concerns about changes in response styles after serious incidents involving mental health issues. Currently, OpenAI is under intense scrutiny from regulators and lawyers, making the AI landscape more challenging than ever.
The basics of the new models are straightforward. GPT-5.1 Instant promises quicker responses, while GPT-5.1 Thinking focuses on tackling more complex problems. Both models reportedly perform better in technical benchmarks than the prior GPT-5, which came out in August.
A notable change is in how these models communicate. Users can now choose from eight preset styles: Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Cynical, Nerdy, and a Default option. This allows the AI to adapt its tone based on the context but maintains the same core capabilities.
OpenAI has also introduced “adaptive reasoning” in GPT-5.1 Instant. This means the model decides when to take more time to process a request before generating a response. This aims to improve the quality of its output.
As a sign of the times, the demand for personalized AI interactions is growing. A recent study found that around 75% of users prefer AIs that can adjust their tone based on the conversation. This reflects a broader trend where people seek more relatable and human-like interactions with technology.
The rollout of these models will be gradual, starting with paid subscribers before reaching free users. The updates will also be available through OpenAI’s API soon. The older GPT-5 models will still be accessible for three more months.
