PBL director Marko Hekkert believes adaptation is crucial. He states, “We need to focus on making choices that will sustain our country in a warming climate.” Extreme weather can lead to various health issues and lower work productivity. Droughts could cut fresh water supplies, affecting both nature and agriculture. Meanwhile, intense rainfall can damage homes and disrupt essential services like communication and energy.
These challenges will affect citizens directly. Home damage, rising food costs, and increased healthcare expenses are all potential consequences. As such, the government must determine acceptable levels of protection, funding sources, and priorities.
Interestingly, 61% of Dutch citizens express a willingness to contribute to climate change solutions. This willingness reflects a growing awareness of the issue. The PBL has urged for better public education through awareness campaigns and emergency plans. This way, people will be more equipped to deal with climate impacts.
