MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The NBA postponed two games on Sunday due to a severe winter storm impacting travel across much of the U.S. The Dallas Mavericks attempted twice to travel to Milwaukee for their game against the Bucks, but the conditions were too dangerous. The decision to postpone was made just hours before the game was set to start. Similarly, the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies game was postponed earlier that day.
New dates for these games have not yet been shared. However, the league adjusted the start times for two games on Monday. The Philadelphia 76ers will face the Charlotte Hornets at 3 p.m. ET instead of 7 p.m., while the Indiana Pacers will take on the Atlanta Hawks at 1:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.
In Memphis, a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain began Friday and continued into Sunday. This has led to widespread power outages and treacherous road conditions. Local officials have advised residents to stay off the roads as icy conditions persist.
The Nuggets are still planning to fly out on Sunday, depending on the weather at Memphis International Airport, as they prepare for their home game against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday.
The Grizzlies are set to face the Rockets in Houston on Monday. Additionally, a scheduled NBA G League game between the Memphis Hustle and Stockton Kings in Southaven has been postponed until February 19.
At least two women’s college basketball games have also been postponed: No. 17 Tennessee versus No. 18 Mississippi, and Tulane’s game against Memphis. Meanwhile, a men’s game featuring Tennessee at No. 21 Georgia has been pushed back to Wednesday.
The basketball schedule changes are part of a broader response, as the league adjusted many matchups earlier in the week in anticipation of the storm. Notably, on Saturday, a game between the Warriors and Timberwolves was postponed for safety reasons following a tragic shooting incident in Minneapolis.
This winter weather is not an isolated event. According to the National Weather Service, winter storms have significantly impacted travel and daily life across several states this season, leading to increased concern for safety. A recent report showed that travel disruptions caused by storms have doubled compared to last year, highlighting the need for preparedness and caution.
