For the second consecutive game, NC State’s defense stepped up when it mattered most. Last week, Jamel Johnson made a crucial fourth-down tackle against East Carolina. This week, linebacker Cian Slone sealed the victory with an interception in the end zone against Virginia.
The game ended with a thrilling 35-31 win for NC State, but it wasn’t easy. Quarterback CJ Bailey dazzled in the first half, scoring a rushing touchdown early on and later connecting with Noah Rogers for a 27-yard touchdown pass. However, Virginia’s offense proved tough to stop, converting 10 out of 13 third downs and taking a 24-14 lead at halftime.
Team captain Sean Brown admitted, “We weren’t playing to our standard,” echoing the concerns that hung in the locker room. Head coach Dave Doeren added, “We gave up 24 points and didn’t play well.”
The turning point came after halftime. The Pack quickly answered Virginia’s lead with an 8-play drive that ended in a touchdown from Hollywood Smothers, narrowing the gap to 24-21. A defensive stand on Virginia’s first possession of the second half allowed NC State to regain momentum.
Smothers then made a spectacular 57-yard run, setting up another touchdown by Bailey. The Pack took the lead, 28-24, and didn’t look back, outscoring Virginia 21-7 in the second half.
Smothers had a standout game with 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns. “He just wants to win,” Coach Doeren noted, emphasizing Smothers’ versatility. The sophomore running back consistently pushes for the ball but also excels as a blocker and receiver.
Meanwhile, Bailey has shown remarkable skill, completing 70% of his passes across two games. His ability to think on his feet and make decisive plays has earned him the affectionate nickname “baby giraffe.” Smothers remarked on how Bailey’s athleticism adds another layer to their offense. Coach Doeren agreed, saying, “When you can throw like he can and defend against his legs, it’s tough on a defense.”
As they celebrate two wins, there seems to be a strong sense of identity within the team. Doeren highlighted their “grit,” which is evident as they continue to surprise opponents.
Recent statistics reveal that NC State’s defense has recorded eight sacks in just two games, reflecting their relentless pressure on opposing quarterbacks. This defensive strength is essential as they prepare for tougher opponents ahead.
In today’s fast-paced sports landscape, social media reactions have surged around NC State’s games. Fans are sharing clips of impressive plays, with many praising Bailey’s cool demeanor under pressure and Smothers’ explosive runs. This community engagement not only fuels team spirit but also increases visibility in a highly competitive college football environment.
