NCAA Strikes Again: 6 More College Basketball Players Lose Eligibility Amid Ongoing Sports Betting Investigation

The NCAA has recently pulled the eligibility of six men’s college basketball players due to serious sports-betting issues. This decision follows investigations into game manipulation and allegations of players intentionally losing to meet betting expectations.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions found players from Arizona State, New Orleans, and Mississippi Valley State involved in activities that raised red flags. Chatton “BJ” Freeman, a player at Arizona State, was caught sharing inside information with a banned player from Fresno State, highlighting the risks of sports betting in college athletics. This misuse of information is concerning, especially as it puts the integrity of the game at stake.

Last month, nearly three dozen individuals were arrested, including an NBA player and a coach, due to various gambling violations. UFC President Dana White also noted unusual betting patterns in a recent fight, raising further alarm in the sports community.

The NCAA is conducting a broader investigation into at least 30 players for potential gambling infractions. Just two months ago, they suspended three Fresno State players for betting on their own games.

Arizona State’s involvement is noteworthy as it is the only power-conference school mentioned in this round of announcements. Freeman allegedly shared betting-related information with a girlfriend and a friend, leading to questions about whether he intentionally influenced his performance, as seen in a match against Florida.

In New Orleans, a student athlete reported overhearing teammates discuss bets placed on their game, revealing a troubling trend. The university has since suspended those involved and is cooperating fully with the NCAA.

Mississippi Valley State’s case is just as concerning. Players there discussed throwing games with an unidentified caller, an action that directly undermines the integrity of their sport. The university has taken these allegations seriously and is reinforcing the importance of compliance with NCAA rules.

These events occur amid discussions within the NCAA about possibly allowing student-athletes to bet on professional sports, though betting on college games remains strictly prohibited. Recently, a vote was delayed to assess the proposed changes to these rules.
