NCJW Responds: SCOTUS Decisions Threaten Medicaid Access for Millions of Americans

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Supreme Court made a controversial ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. This decision significantly weakens a key part of the Affordable Care Act and puts millions of women’s health care in jeopardy.

Sheila Katz, CEO of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), spoke out against the ruling. She said, “This decision is morally indefensible. Stripping Medicaid patients of their right to choose providers like Planned Parenthood will cost lives and harm our most vulnerable communities.”

Katz highlighted that about one in five women in the U.S. depends on Medicaid for essential health care. Over 40% of births in the country are covered by this program. Without access to providers like Planned Parenthood, many will face increased risks, including untreated infections and high-risk pregnancies.

“As Jews, we believe in dignity and compassion for everyone. Denying health care based on someone’s chosen provider goes against our core values,” Katz added. “We will not remain silent.”

Family planning has always been vital to the mission of NCJW. They understand that attacks on Planned Parenthood aren’t just about abortion; they threaten essential health services for low-income and minority families across America.

Darcy Hirsh, NCJW’s senior director of government relations, echoed the urgency of the situation. She stated, “Today’s ruling compromises the Affordable Care Act, stripping away the right to choose one’s health care provider. Without legal recourse, many will face significant barriers to essential care.”

Hirsh emphasized that this decision seems aimed at undermining Planned Parenthood, which provides critical health services, including cancer screenings and prenatal care. “We will keep fighting to ensure everyone has access to the health care they need,” she said.

The public reaction has been strong. Many took to social media to voice their concerns, sharing personal stories about their reliance on Planned Parenthood for health care. The hashtag #YourChoiceMatters trended on Twitter as advocates rallied to protect reproductive rights.

This ruling comes at a time when women’s rights are already under significant threat. According to a 2023 report by the Guttmacher Institute, states have passed over 500 restrictive abortion measures in recent years, limiting access to care for millions. The concern is not only about abortion, but also about comprehensive reproductive health services that are crucial for many families.
