CHICOPEE — Food insecurity is growing in America. To address this issue, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal and U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern visited Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry. They aimed to shine a light on the effects of recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
McGovern has been actively touring Massachusetts, named the “End Hunger Now” tour. He wants to hear how these cuts are affecting communities and to support local organizations like Lorraine’s that are working to combat hunger.
During their visit, Neal and McGovern joined Lorraine’s executive director, Kim Caisse, in food distribution. They talked to clients about how the SNAP cuts and rising food prices make it tough to access healthy food.
Each week, Lorraine’s serves over 1,000 meals and assists more than 300 families through its pantry. These numbers skyrocketed during the recent SNAP benefit shutdown. Caisse mentioned, “We saw nearly triple our usual numbers during that time.” She expressed her concern about how many families are struggling to put food on the table.
McGovern stressed that no one in such a wealthy country should go hungry. He pointed out the stark reality: “Nearly 100,000 people in Massachusetts risk losing food assistance due to federal cuts.” He argued that these cuts removed nearly $200 billion from food assistance programs, affecting 42 million people nationwide—families, seniors, veterans, and more.
Experts point out that hunger in the U.S. has been increasing, particularly among vulnerable groups. According to a recent report by Feeding America, food insecurity rose by 26% between 2019 and 2021. This shows that the problem isn’t going away; in fact, it’s worsening.
McGovern noted, “We can’t solve the hunger crisis through charity alone. We need a robust federal safety net.” He and Neal plan to advocate against these cuts as discussions about the farm bill come up next month. This bill will shape future food assistance programs.
The visit also highlighted community efforts. State legislators and local leaders joined Neal and McGovern, showing a united front against hunger in Massachusetts. Their shared goal is to reverse damaging cuts and ensure everyone has access to food.
As hunger remains a pressing issue, the community’s role is crucial. Organizations like Lorraine’s not only provide meals but also foster hope and dignity in those they serve. Addressing food insecurity requires more awareness and action from both the community and the government.
