There’s a big change coming for HBO’s The Last of Us as Season 3 approaches. Neil Druckmann, who helped create the series and was deeply involved in its early seasons, is stepping back from day-to-day creative tasks. While he will remain a co-creator and executive producer, he won’t be writing or directing any episodes this season.

In his own words, Druckmann expressed, “I’ve made the difficult decision to step away…now is the right time for me to focus on Naughty Dog and its future projects.” He plans to concentrate on his next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Halley Gross, another key player who co-wrote The Last of Us Part II, is also leaving her regular role. Gross mentioned in a social media post that collaborating with the cast and crew has been life-changing. “The stories we told about love and loss are exactly why I love this franchise,” she shared.

This shift raises questions about how Season 3 will unfold without the main creative forces behind the first two seasons. Druckmann and Gross have been critical in shaping the show to reflect the spirit of the video games, with Druckmann credited with writing five episodes and directing two.

Craig Mazin, the showrunner, remarked on this transition, stating he felt fortunate to work alongside Druckmann. He emphasized his excitement about continuing to develop the show with a talented team while respecting the legacy of the source material.

As for the story, Season 3 is expected to dive into the plot of The Last of Us Part II, following a cliffhanger from Season 2 that hinted at a focus on Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. While HBO hasn’t confirmed if this season will be the last, there’s palpable anticipation among fans.
