NetEase is scaling back its international gaming ambitions.
This shift began late last year with job cuts and halted projects like Worlds Untold and Jar of Sparks. Recently, Game File revealed that the company is seeking to sell off many of its non-Chinese studios.
Anonymity-clad sources suggest that NetEase may sell off most of its overseas teams. If a buyer can’t be found, studios like Quantic Dream and Grasshopper Manufacture might be at risk of shutting down.
Other studios facing uncertainty include Anchor Point, GPTRACK50, Jackalyptic Games, and several more.
While NetEase did not offer an official comment, they told Game File: “All studios and projects are in constant review and evaluation.” The company is considering necessary changes as part of this process.
Recently, NetEase made cuts to the US-based team behind Marvel Rivals, even though the game has been performing well. They said the move aimed to “optimize development efficiency.” Despite the changes, they claim to remain committed to their global expansion plans.
Intriguingly, it was reported that Marvel Rivals almost didn’t get released because the CEO hesitated to pay Disney for character rights.
