The investment aims to boost local production companies and grow the Mexican audiovisual industry. It promises to create numerous opportunities across the country. Netflix also plans to inject $2 million into Churubusco Studios, a historic film studio in Mexico City, to enhance its facilities.
Netflix is committed to nurturing talent behind the scenes. They have funds set aside to support diverse and creative individuals who want to build careers in entertainment. Last August, they announced over $1 million for programs in 2024 and 2025 specifically for this purpose.
Netflix first entered the Mexican market in September 2011. By 2015, they produced their first series outside the U.S. there, called Club de Cuervos. This show set the stage for Netflix’s programming strategy focused on local productions.
In 2019, Netflix opened its first office in Mexico and established their Latin American headquarters in 2020. The workforce has grown dramatically, from just 30 employees to nearly 400.
According to Sarandos, Mexico holds a special significance for Netflix. The success of Club de Cuervos proved the potential of local content. All Netflix projects in Mexico involve local production partners, which supports the creative community and provides jobs in various sectors, from catering to transport.
Mexico has been home to several Netflix successes. The film Roma won three Academy Awards, marking a historic moment for both Netflix and Mexico. Netflix also produced Bardo, a submission for the Oscars in 2022, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which won for best animated feature in 2023.
From The House of Flowers to Love Sick, Netflix has collaborated with many Mexican creators, showcasing stories that resonate with local audiences. One highly anticipated project is a new documentary about the life and art of Juan Gabriel, set to be released soon.
