Netflix’s new series “Man on Fire” takes us back to the tale of John Creasy, a character first brought to life in A. J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel. Many fans might remember Denzel Washington’s memorable portrayal from the 2004 film. Now, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II steps into Creasy’s shoes, this time in a show adapted by Kyle Killen.
The first season kicks off in Mexico City. Creasy is in his element, orchestrating a mission for the CIA. Just as things seem to be going smoothly, tragedy strikes. An ambush leaves Creasy injured and alone, witnessing the brutal fallout around him. Fast forward four years, and he’s a shadow of his former self—lost and battling personal demons after a downward spiral. A life-changing opportunity leads him to Rio de Janeiro, where he encounters a new mission and a family that welcomes him with open arms.
Although Creasy is a burdensome guest, his character evolves when he must protect a teenager named Poe, played by Billie Boullet. Their bond brings some much-needed heart to the series. However, while the chemistry between them is commendable, it’s not quite at the level of the connection Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning shared.
The series showcases the stark contrast within Rio de Janeiro, moving between affluent neighborhoods and the favelas—a feature reminiscent of the acclaimed film “City of God.” This visual storytelling enhances the backdrop against which the drama unfolds.
Despite solid performances, “Man on Fire” tends to follow a predictable path. Experts in storytelling often emphasize the importance of character depth and unexpected twists. Here, however, the series leans on familiar tropes of the action genre, ultimately making it feel safe rather than groundbreaking.
From a recent survey by Netflix, audiences expressed a desire for more character-driven narratives that deviate from typical action plots. While “Man on Fire” offers an engaging watch, it may not fully satisfy those seeking a fresh take on a well-worn story.
Overall, with Abdul-Mateen II giving a strong performance and the series providing a compelling glimpse into Rio’s social dynamics, “Man on Fire” serves its purpose. It’s an engaging watch, especially for binge-watchers, but it may not leave a lasting mark in the genre.
