Netflix has taken a strong stance against ByteDance over its Seedance 2.0 AI service, claiming it’s enabling copyright infringement. The streaming giant recently sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding that ByteDance remove its intellectual property from training datasets and create barriers to stop further misuse.
According to Mindy LeMoine, Netflix’s director of litigation, Seedance acts as a “high-speed piracy engine.” She emphasized that Netflix won’t allow its beloved characters and stories to be treated like free clip art.
This letter comes after similar allegations from Disney, Paramount, and Warner Bros., all accusing ByteDance of infringing on their intellectual property. Netflix specifically highlighted concerns regarding popular titles like “Stranger Things,” “KPop Demon Hunters,” “Squid Game,” and “Bridgerton.” For instance, in “Bridgerton,” unauthorized videos have surfaced showing costumes from Season 4, which Netflix claims are exactly mimicked.
In yet another example, detailed reproductions of the “Stranger Things” finale, featuring recognizable characters and monsters, have circulated online. Users have even created unique mashups, putting real-life figures like Elon Musk into settings from “Squid Game.”
Despite ByteDance’s promise to implement stricter measures against copyright violations, Netflix remains unsatisfied. Their letter is notable for explicitly threatening legal action. They also sought to address potential “fair use” defenses, arguing that using copyrighted material for commercial gain doesn’t actually fall under fair use.
Seedance 2.0 represents a leap forward in AI technology, mixing video and audio seamlessly with just a few prompts. As this technology evolves, the debate about copyright and intellectual property rights will undoubtedly grow more complex.
