New Avondale Grocery Store Opens: A Community Celebration Ending the Neighborhood’s Food Desert

CINCINNATI — The Avondale neighborhood has celebrated a significant change: it now has its own full-service grocery store after nearly 20 years. The Country Meat Co. Marketplace opened its doors to eager shoppers, bringing fresh hope to a community that has struggled with access to quality food.

On opening day, the excitement was palpable. Crowds gathered outside, waiting to step inside the new store on Reading Road. Owner Tennell Bryant expressed how meaningful this project is to him and the community. Avondale has been without a full-service grocery since Aldi closed in 2008.

“The food desert is over,” said Bryant. He emphasized that the marketplace is dedicated to serving the community. The store is the result of years of planning and community support.

Back in 2019, Reggie Harris discussed the need for a grocery store as construction began at the Avondale Town Center. He believed it was essential for fulfilling a promise to the community.

The city council played a role in making this store a reality, approving $250,000 in funding to help with the opening costs. Council member Jeff Cramerding noted that it was crucial to support the new business.

Ebony J. Wynn, one of the first customers to enter, shared her excitement: “I’m thrilled to see this store here for us. It’s wonderful to have this option again.” Many in the community hope the store becomes a gathering place, helping to build stronger local connections.

The Country Meat Co. Marketplace offers fresh produce, a coffee bar, a full-service meat counter, and essential grocery items. This isn’t just a place to shop; it aims to be a hub for community interaction.

Perry Ward, a longtime resident, has waited 30 years for a store like this. He feels confident that it will thrive. It’s important for the community,” he said, highlighting its significance as a locally owned business in an African American neighborhood.

The atmosphere in the store was joyful as customers filled their carts, greeted each other, and shared in the moment. Owner Tennell Bryant sees success in being a reliable part of the community. “We’re here to stay and to be that community hub,” he affirmed.
