TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A new food locker has been introduced to combat hunger in the capital city. This locker, the fourth in Tallahassee, is part of a local initiative by Leon County, the City of Tallahassee, and Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
Food lockers function like food pantries but are designed for quick access. They will provide food every day outside the Neighborhood Medical Center. Users simply need to reach out to the center for a code that allows them to access the locker when they need it.
Interestingly, Tallahassee boasts more food lockers than any other city in the U.S., according to a representative from Second Harvest. This is a step towards greater food accessibility, especially in areas facing food insecurity.
The project was funded with $250,000 from the American Rescue Plan and highlights the collaboration between the city, county, Second Harvest, and the Neighborhood Medical Center.

According to a recent survey by Feeding America, around 35 million people in the U.S. experience food insecurity, and services like food lockers can make a significant difference.
