New Hampshire lawmakers are reconsidering a plan to ban all vaccine clinics in public schools. Recently, the state Senate passed a bill allowing flu vaccine clinics to continue during school hours and during public health emergencies. However, funding for these clinics could be a challenge.
This year, local health agencies halted flu vaccine clinics in schools after the state Department of Health and Human Services stopped using federal funds. A spokesperson, Jake Leon, explained that this shift was due to “ongoing changes in federal funding.”
Leon noted that while school clinics are no longer funded, routine immunizations for children under 19 are still covered and available at doctor’s offices, urgent care centers, and pharmacies. He emphasized that the updated bill gives communities more flexibility to respond to local health needs.
Initially, Republican lawmakers aimed to ban school vaccine clinics during the pandemic when many schools hosted COVID vaccine clinics. They are now trying again with legislation that would not only prohibit clinics during school hours but also require parents to be present for vaccinations, rather than just providing written permission.
Public health leaders voiced concerns at a recent Senate hearing. Officials from the state health department highlighted that school-based clinics offer convenience for families and are an efficient way to tackle public health issues.
For the bill to advance, the House must approve the Senate’s changes before it goes to the governor.
Recent data highlights the benefits of school-based clinics. A survey from the National Association of School Nurses revealed that 70% of school nurses believe such clinics improve vaccination rates in children. Their convenience might be a crucial factor in encouraging parents to vaccinate their kids.
